Spiritual Formation

How do we become more like Jesus? How do we experience His deep love for us — and grow deeper in our love for Him? How do we grow in “wisdom, knowledge, and understanding” — in obedience and faithfulness to Him? (Colossians 1:9-12) How do we become the people He created us to be?

This is what spiritual formation is all about. Biblically speaking, spiritual formation is the process of “being formed” — formed and “conformed” — into the image of Christ. (Romans 8:29)

I love how The Message paraphrases this verse:

“God knew what He was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those who love Him along the same lines as the life of His Son… We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in Him. After God made that decision of what His children should be like, He followed it up by calling people by name. After He called them by name, He set them on a solid basis with Himself. And then, after getting them established, He stayed with them to the end, gloriously completing what He had begun.”  (Romans 8:29)

It’s His work, beginning to end, His grace that accomplishes it all. But He graciously, lovingly, tenderly invites us to participate in the process — to respond to His call.

Spiritual formation is my passion (all the other ministry I do — for instance for women, or on C.S. Lewis, or in the prayer labyrinth — all points back to it). I even got my doctorate in the subject, studying spiritual formation as taught by Henri Nouwen. I love encouraging others on their journey, sharing what I’ve learned from Scripture, from the saints (both historical and contemporary Christians) — wise men and women who’ve gone before us and whose lives serve as shining examples for us. And of course from my own experience.

(I’ve shared about my spiritual journey here, through many other blog posts, and in my books What Women Should Know About Facing Fear and What Women Should Know About Letting It Go.)

If I can serve Jesus by serving you and your community, I’d love to!
